WiP: Black Cat (Spoilers)

I still fall victim to the occasional Woolgirl kit that isn't a part of a club series.  This time I couldn't resist the Black Cat Halloween kit and it, too, arrived last week... and then jumped right on the needles!

************ Spoilers from this point on! ************

The kit contents:

The black cat with the polka dot background is a pack of decorated tissues and the cute pumpkin and ghost fabric above it is a small tissue pack holder.  The smiling cat pyramid at the upper left is an old-fashioned style treat box (although mine was squashed pretty flat during shipping).  There's also the black cat notepad in the lower right, a cat charm/ornament, black cat gummies, and candy corn kisses.  I love the included project bag, which is nice and large with a drawstring closure.

I'm excited to try more new yarn that I haven't heard of before: Pico Accuardi Dyeworks Acid and Weed Sock!

But the kit also included a warning that the yarn would bleed some due to the dye process.  We'll see if that means it will also fade significantly in the first few washings or not.  At the moment, it's very dark, nearly black, but I can see hints of deep wine colors, too, with enough direct light.  And of course another adorable WeeOnes stitch marker that will be carefully added to my collection.

There's also a sock pattern included:

Which showcases either a much lighter version of the yarn -or- what the yarn might look like after a few washings.  I couldn't tell much of what the pattern would look like from the included photos, so when I had a lot of knitting time over the weekend and an itch to start a new project I cast on for Spook sock #1:

And made a lot of progress!

Late night photo shoots and black yarn don't make for the best photos, but I'll get better photos later -- especially since I finished the first sock already last night.

So a couple of quick notes about these socks:
  1. I really appreciate the note about the yarn bleeding!  Working on these had turned my fingers black and stained my fingernails.  It does come off with some washing, but it's a bit disconcerting when it looks like I've been playing with charcoal or something.  It's also the reason that I haven't been using the included project bag for these socks - I'm concerned that having the yarn tumble around inside while I knit would stain the fabric.
  2. I'm pretty sure these socks have a hidden fish motif.  The chart for the pattern sure looks like a fish, but because of the way the pattern wraps around without any panels of other stitches in between I don't think anyone will notice any fish resemblance in the finished socks.  I guess that's either disappointing if you want people to know about it or a kind of secret hidden feature that only the designer and the knitter knows about.
  3. This yarn seems to make a very squishy sock.
I'm not sure I can keep the pace and finish sock #2 by the weekend, but it's been fun working on a seasonal sock and they'll certainly be done in plenty of time for Halloween!

Wow, what a great kit! Sad to hear the yarn bleeds! Thanks for participating in WIPW!

Very pretty sock. You could try soaking the yarn in a cold water vinegar bath.

I'm OK with the bleeding as long as it stops with the first wash or two.

I will have to try the cold water vinegar bath. I'm not looking forward to soot-colored feet. ;)
