Simple Soothing Socks for WiP Wednesday

I have a lot of projects lingering on the needles for various reasons, which isn't really a common occurrence for me.  But since I often want knitting to be relaxing, I started a simpler, more mindless project to work on in between dedicated efforts to deal with the trickier things.  So for the first time in a very long time, I'm working on simple stockinette socks - with a twist.

Peek-a-boo, it's a picot hem cuff!
I was intrigued by the round toe, afterthought heel, and double knit picot hem of Turtlegirl's Let it Be socks.  It seemed like a great pattern to showcase variegated yarn that had a lot to say on its own and I had yarn that wanted to do just that.

My Ixia yarn from Creatively Dyed Yarn (purchased at Stitches Midwest 2009) worked really well in stockinette for a charity hat.  I really liked how bright and cheery it was (both in the skein and when knit into a hat) and how well the colors played together without great globs of shocking pooling.  And with 510 yards to the skein I had more than enough left over for a pair of socks.

So now I have one very strange looking almost-sock.  There's a line of waste yarn where the heel will go, but I decided to wait until both socks reach this stage to work the heels, just in case I don't have quite enough yarn and need some sort of contrasting heel instead.

Someday I'll sprout a heel and grow up to be a real sock
Of course I've been sucked into the much needed, happy, therapeutic sock knitting and haven't really been devoting time to those other projects since I cast on for these.  Oops!

What a lovely sock! I'm considering expanding my sock knitting repertoire (just the one pattern at the moment ;-) ), perhaps I should try this one. Love the colours.

Looks like an exciting set of colours, neat idea to hold off on the heels too - just in case :)

I have a skein of Creatively Dyed yarn from Stitches South. You definitely made me want to get it out of the stash & put it to work.

I love the colors in the yarn! And I really love the picot edge!! Seems like it would be a shame to cover the edge up with pants :)

The picot edge is adorable! The almost-sock is so funny and flat *giggle* I can't wait to see the finished pair!

Thanks for all of the comments!

I personally love the Steele base from Creatively Dyed Yarn -- so much so that I made sure to buy another skein with a similar feel (Beaches) from Stitches Midwest this year!
