Theory vs. Practice

I open the question up for debate...how many projects on the needles at once is too many? I currently have:

1. M.O. socks
2. Jitterbug socks
3. Undulating waves scarf
4. Alpaca blanket

I really want some sport weight socks on the needles. But I think I have come up against my mental threshold for too much. If I finish M.O. socks, then I get jitterbug. The scarf, I only work on with Amy...so that's different.

Sooooooooooooooo...is another pair of socks acceptable? I bring it to a vote.

I don't know that I have a fixed number either, but when I had 4 going I felt like I was teetering near the line of too many, too.

A blanket is a big project, so it makes sense to have something smaller to work on for when you need a break or something more portable. That means 2 is fine. Since your scarf can only be worked on at certain times, I agree that the scarf doesn't really count, so 3 makes sense. Your M.O. socks have been daunting, so I see why you have a fourth project, too.

Now, if it were me, I'd make myself finish one of the pairs of socks before starting another project. I know a lot of people keep a lot of projects in various states, but I'd be afraid that I would put some down and never finish them again. And you're so close on the M.O. socks! One more good push and you can be done with them and reward yourself with some Jitterbug or something new.

Of course, my mental state is decidedly different from a lot of peoples', so take my vote with that in mind. ;)

Um, of course I vote that it's okay to start new socks! Part of my hobby theory is that you should be enjoying yourself or else you'll find yourself avoiding knitting. That would be horrible! Start your sportweight sock, and when guilt weighs on you, finish up the MO socks. You already own the yarn and the needles, so you're reducing your stash pile. Why did you buy so many sock needles if you weren't going to use them? :) Much like Ludistitcher, my mindset varies widely from others! I think that you've seen the best arguments from both sides now!

I visited a blog where someone had over 20 items listed as "In Progress", so we're all on the low side according to some!
